Bitcoin mining firm Marathon (MARA) has announced a major initiative to enhance its Bitcoin holdings by planning to offer $250 million in convertible senior notes, which will be due in September 2031. According to the press release, the notes will be unsecured, senior obligations of MARA and will bear interest payable semi-annually starting March 1, 2025. The notes can be converted into cash, shares of Marathon's common stock, or a combination of both, depending on the company's decision. The funds raised from this offering are intended to be used for acquiring additional Bitcoin and for general corporate purposes.

Marathon, the second-largest publicly traded Bitcoin holder, currently owns 20,000 BTC valued at over $1.2 billion. The only company with a larger Bitcoin portfolio is Michael Saylor’s MicroStrategy, which holds 226,500 BTC worth more than $13.7 billion. Marathon's CEO Fred Thiel has indicated on social media that the company is following in the footsteps of Saylor’s strategy to accumulate Bitcoin. This follows MicroStrategy’s own recent plan to issue $500 million in convertible senior notes to purchase more Bitcoin and support general corporate needs.

The move by Marathon comes in the wake of MicroStrategy's impressive stock performance, which has surged nearly 1,000% since it first invested heavily in Bitcoin four years ago.
