1. Bitfinex Massive Hack Suspect: Couple Plead Guilty To Bitcoin Laundering
In the 2016 Bitfinex attack, a New York man admitted to being the initial bitcoin hacker and pled guilty in federal court to a conspiracy to launder the stolen money, which ended up being worth $4.5 billion.
Ilya "Dutch" Lichtenstein entered his guilty plea in Washington, D.C., before his wife, Heather Rhiannon Morgan, confessed guilty to money laundering conspiracy and plot to defraud the United States government.
Until Lichtenstein admitted in court, no one knew who had hacked the bitcoin from the cryptocurrency exchange Bitfinex.
